Our Work / Mental Health Support

Mental health support in Uganda.
You deserve to be heard.

Difficult experiences can affect how we feel, relate to others and see our future. Happy Care Foundation’s mission includes trauma-informed mental health support that respects each person’s dignity and circumstances.

Respect for your dignity

Attention to your circumstances

Support guided by your needs

Healing starts with understanding

Trauma, violence, detention, family difficulties and social exclusion can create emotional and psychological challenges. Legal assistance alone may not address these experiences.

HCF’s constitution connects mental health with legal protection, rehabilitation and reintegration. We aim to help vulnerable people rebuild confidence and move towards sustainable recovery.

Our programme prioritises people in conflict with the law, vulnerable children and women who have survived gender-based violence, alongside the broader groups identified in our mission.

A space to listen. A path towards hope.

Support shaped around the person

Trauma counselling

The mental health unit’s mandate includes counselling that recognises the effect of difficult experiences and supports emotional recovery.

Psychosocial and group support

Psychosocial support and appropriate group therapy are included in our constitution, alongside work to build confidence and connection.

Specialist referrals

Psychiatric referrals are part of the unit’s responsibilities when more specialised assessment or care is needed.

Contact HCF to confirm the services currently available, eligibility and referral arrangements. This programme page does not provide a diagnosis or medical advice.

What reaching out can look like

Begin with a conversation

You do not have to share your full story in an initial enquiry. Tell us how to contact you safely and the kind of support you are seeking.

The team can discuss your circumstances, explain available options and consider appropriate referrals. Support should respect consent, dignity and safeguarding responsibilities.

Support without pressure

People respond to difficult experiences differently. Our approach is centred on listening, respect and appropriate support rather than assuming that every person needs the same response.

Information should be handled responsibly. Ask the team how your information will be used and about any safeguarding limits to confidentiality.

Building understanding beyond the individual

Mental health awareness is also part of HCF’s programme mandate. Families and communities can help reduce stigma, recognise when someone needs support and make reintegration more welcoming.

Questions about this programme

Who can ask about mental health support?

Individuals, caregivers and referral partners can contact HCF. The team will assess whether appropriate support is available for the person’s needs and location.

Does HCF provide psychiatric treatment?

The constitution includes psychiatric referrals. Do not assume that HCF operates a psychiatric clinic or directly provides medication; ask the team about current referral options.

What if someone is in immediate danger?

This website is not an emergency response service. Seek urgent assistance from local emergency services or the nearest health facility if there is immediate danger or an urgent health concern.
